Dielectric constants of soils at microwave frequencies-2 - Wang, J.
The dielectric constants of several soil samples were measured at frequencies of 5 and 19 GHz using the infinite transmission line method. The results of these measurements are presented and discussed with respect to soil types and texture structures. A comparison is made with other measurements at 1.4 GHz. At all three frequencies, the dependence of dielectric constant on soil moisture can be approximated by two straight lines...

Two insulation systems for tanks containing liquid methane in supersonic cruise-type aircraft were designed and tested after an extensive materials investigation. One system is an external insulation and the other is an internal wet-type insulation system. Tank volume was maximized by making the tank shape approach a rectangular parallelopiped. One tank was designed to use the external insulation and the other tank to use the internal insulation...

Scramjet nozzle design and analysis as applied to a highly integrated hypersonic research airplane - Small, W. J.
Engine-nozzle airframe integration at hypersonic speeds was conducted by using a high-speed research aircraft concept as a focus. Recently developed techniques for analysis of scramjet-nozzle exhaust flows provide a realistic analysis of complex forces resulting from the engine-nozzle airframe coupling. By properly integrating the engine-nozzle propulsive system with the airframe, efficient, controlled and stable flight results over a wide speed range.

Long-range planning cost model for support of future space missions by the deep space network - Sherif, J. S.
A simple model is suggested to do long-range planning cost estimates for Deep Space Network (DSP) support of future space missions. The model estimates total DSN preparation costs and the annual distribution of these costs for long-range budgetary planning. The cost model is based on actual DSN preparation costs from four space missions: Galileo, Voyager (Uranus), Voyager (Neptune), and Magellan. The model was tested against the four projects and gave cost estimates that range from 18 percent ab...

Developmental adaptations to gravity in animals - Hargens, Alan R
Terrestrial animals have adapted to a constant gravitational stress over millions of years. Tissues of the cardiovascular system and lumbar spine in tall species of animals such as the giraffe are particularly well adapted to high and variable vectors of gravitational force. Swelling of the leg tissues in the giraffe is prevented by a variety of physiological mechanisms including (1) a natural 'antigravity suit', (2) impermeable capillaries, (3) arterial-wall hypertrophy, (4) variable blood pres...

Adding run history to CLIPS - Tuttle, Sharon M.
To debug a C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS) program, certain 'historical' information about a run is needed. It would be convenient for system builders to have the capability to request such information. We will discuss how historical Rete networks can be used for answering questions that help a system builder detect the cause of an error in a CLIPS program. Moreover, the cost of maintaining a historical Rete network is compared with that for a classical Rete network...

Tables of square-law signal detection statistics for Hann spectra with 50 percent overlap - Deans, Stanley R.
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, currently being planned by NASA, will require that an enormous amount of data be analyzed in real time by special purpose hardware. It is expected that overlapped Hann data windows will play an important role in this analysis. In order to understand the statistical implication of this approach, it has been necessary to compute detection statistics for overlapped Hann spectra...

Investigation of the dilatational dissipation in compressible homogeneous shear flow - Blaisdell, G. A.
The dilatational dissipation rate within compressible homogeneous turbulent shear flow is studied using data from direct numerical simulations. It is found that the dilatational dissipation rate is mainly associated with large scale acoustic waves. Eddy shocklets are observed; however, they have little contribution to the average dissipation rate. A mechanism for the generation of eddy shocklets is shown to be the focusing of acoustic waves...
